True to our name of Explorers Class, this week we have begun to look at the topic of Christopher Columbus and Exploration! We read the history of Christopher Columbus, watched a video about his exploits and looked at the history of exploration. It didn't take us long to discover that history is complicated and so there has been lots of conversation about the rights and wrongs of the way that people have explored our planet and treated one another this week! We started off discussing what we knew, and what we'd like to find out about Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration! What we already knew...
What we wanted to Know...
We've begun to try and answer these questions. In our Aistear time we've been creating maps of Columbus' journeys, making picture fact files about him. Exploring the world in the role play area, and exploring what materials float and sink so that we can design and build our own boats next week. We even got to explore different materials using a microscope attached to the computer!! In Maths this week we continued to explore the number system and we enjoyed our first week of Power Hour too!

It was a fabulous week of writing poetry, exploring doubling and halving, making games, and looking at the topic 'An Aimsir' in Gaeilge.
We studied some more poems and made a list of things that poems sometimes have, such as rhyming or repetition. Then we had a go of writing our own poems about our favourite toys and members of our family. We talked about the fact that poems can be happy, sad, funny or anything in between really! We discussed that it is up to the poet to say what they want to say! We had great fun exploring toys from the past and making our very own games! Happy New Year everyone! It was lovely to see all of first class greeting each other after the break and sharing their news of their adventures! This week we've looked at the properties of numbers, investigated the magic 'e' sound and the silent 'e' too. Have a look at this video and see if you can spot the magic and silent 'e' sounds (even though the song calls them all silent)! We also investigated poetry this week and even performed some well known poems in front of the class! A particular favourite was Michael Rosen's poem 'Don't'! In Aistear we've started looking at toys from the past, we compared them to modern toys and we wrote instructions for how to play games like Marbles, Spinning Tops, Jacks and Draughts. We also drew our family circle and played lots of 'old' games in the role play area.
