Last week Simon came in from Carlow Educate Together as part of our Digital Cluster project to film us making use of using the computers in a lesson about solving arguments (part of the Learn Together curriculum). It was a really fun experience and the children did a fabulous job! Well done and thank you! Today, as well as all of the fab learning we've been doing in Aistear, we played some really fun maths games and took the time to visit the updated library.
Everyone loves the new books and furniture and its great to see the children using it! We're now into our second week of looking at the fabulous world of weather! So far we've presented the weather forecast in the role play area, transformed weather data as a bar chart, thought about what clothes we might need in different parts of the world and made our own wind vanes and rain gauges.
We're now looking more extreme types of weather. We looked at Hurricane Ophelia in English and used the computers to find and select information. In Aistear we're making fact files about hurricanes and tornadoes and even building storm chasing tornado tanks! It has been a lot of fun! In Maths we've been investigating the column method of addition and in Irish we've been looking at Siopadóireacht. In our second week of looking at Africa we finished making our bead bracelets and necklaces, built houses from found materials and made fact-files all about Africa.
Following on from building adobe houses last week, we looked at the different types of houses that people live in and talked about the differences in the way that people live. We looked at some photos and videos of townships in South Africa and talked about what we saw and how it made us feel. It led us to talk about what we value in our lives, what we hold dear, and what brings us joy. I was amazed at the understanding, compassion and thoughtfulness of 1st class. We've had a fabulous first week back. We looked at 3d Shapes in Maths, began looking at Siopadóireacht in Gaeilge, and have started the topic of Africa in Aistear.
We talked a lot about our planet's second largest continent, about its landscapes, wonders and contrasts. We looked at a traditional tale called 'Why the Clouds Sit on Top of the Hill' and learned about gogos and a monkey called Kensani. We started making bead necklaces, added colour to patterned artworks, retold the tale in the role play area and built adobe houses from crackers! |
