It was round two of the bridge testing today! There was mass excitement as the bridges surpassed expectations and only came clattering down after wooden blocks were piled on top!
Well done everyone for being a fabulous team and enjoying exploring the world around you with such joy!

What a busy day!
Today we had the joy of sharing lots of stories about our grandparents and many Grandparents coming to visit the classroom too. Thank you to everyone who was able to come and visit! Today was also our first day to test the strength of our bridges. We took on other teams from our class to see how many blocks our bridge could support! Well done to everyone for being fantastic competitors whether you won or lost. Those whose were successful will be taking on each other tomorrow to find the two strongest bridges from the class! This week we have been looking at the story of 'Fionn and the Dragon'. It has been fabulous to see the enthusiasm with which the children have tried to defend the High King of Tara from the pesky dragon! We've also built crannógs and placed prehistoric monuments on a map of Ireland. Have a look at the photos below! Last week we were set a challenge....could we build a bridge?
Explorers class had to work together to build a lollipop stick bridge across a chasm of 30cm! It was a glorious week of designing, building, testing, fixing, failing, succeeding and investigation. As part of our STEM activities, we will be testing the bridges to see how much they weight they can support and which team designed an built the strongest bridge. Good luck everyone! We've had a fabulous first week back looking at Newbridge and the history of the town. We had great fun looking at old and new maps of the town and it's river.
You can see Newbridge from above here... https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.1714431,-6.8270012,7963m/data=!3m1!1e We wrote books about Newbridge and it's history, built bridges and fished in the Liffey in the role play area and drew maps of our journey to school. In English we have begun to look at story writing and in Maths we continued looking at our number skillls. In Irish we have been looking at the topic Caitheamh Aimsire. The Explorers' classroom is a busy, lively place full of conversation, discovery and collaboration. Games are played and questions are discussed! The children are up and about and moving as they learn, and it can be a delightfully noisy place to be! But, sometimes, there needs to be a calmer space, as the task needs the skills of concentration and perseverance. When completing such tasks, I quite often put on music in the background. Some of the children have asked me the names of the artists and what music it is, so I thought I’d share some of the music here. The Gloaming are fiddle player Martin Hayes, guitarist Dennis Cahill, vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird, fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, and pianist Thomas Bartlett. Some of their songs are instumental. When Iarla sings, it is usually in Irish. Ólafur Arnalds is from Iceland. Nils Frahm is a German musician. This week we are being historians and looking into the history of the town in which we go to school and lots of us live. NEWBRIDGE!We'll be sharing more during the week, but for now, here is a link to the National Library of Ireland website, where you can explore some fabulous photographs of Newbridge in the past.
