Last week Simon came in from Carlow Educate Together as part of our Digital Cluster project to film us making use of using the computers in a lesson about solving arguments (part of the Learn Together curriculum). It was a really fun experience and the children did a fabulous job! Well done and thank you! Today, as well as all of the fab learning we've been doing in Aistear, we played some really fun maths games and took the time to visit the updated library.
Everyone loves the new books and furniture and its great to see the children using it!

This week we've begun to look at the topic of 'Our Garden'. We've been looking at the life that may live or visit our gardens at home or in school.
We planted some wildflowers in the woodlands and had a look at the school garden. In Aistear we made 'seed-bombs', created a fabulous piece of wildflower art, catergorised the plants and animals we might find in the garden and made our own small world gardens too. We had great fun looking at seeds and the hazardous spikes of some nettles and other plants using the digital microscope! In Maths we looked at adding and subtraction and in Gaeilge we were looking at 'An Teilifís'. In Literacy we had power hour and worked on our long vowel sounds. We've continued to look at the theme of Space this week. It has been fabulous fun investigating the universe!
We've looked at the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, the rest of our solar system and beyond! In the role play area we have been rocket engineers, busy adapting and fixing our spaceship. We looked at some videos of the International Space Station and discovered how astronauts eat, sleep, brush their teeth and even visit the bathroom! We made books all about space too, it is brilliant to see Explorers class developing their information gathering and writing skills. In English we had power hour and in Maths we looked at the topic of spatial awareness. Another fun and busy week in 1st class!
We designed and built boats, wrote messages in bottles (we were stranded on desert islands!) and continued to explore the world in the role play area. We wrote letters to Queen Isabella of Spain telling her about the discoveries we had made and the people we had met. In Gaeilge we are looking at the topic of clothes and in Maths we were investigating patterns. True to our name of Explorers Class, this week we have begun to look at the topic of Christopher Columbus and Exploration! We read the history of Christopher Columbus, watched a video about his exploits and looked at the history of exploration. It didn't take us long to discover that history is complicated and so there has been lots of conversation about the rights and wrongs of the way that people have explored our planet and treated one another this week! We started off discussing what we knew, and what we'd like to find out about Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration! What we already knew...
What we wanted to Know...
We've begun to try and answer these questions. In our Aistear time we've been creating maps of Columbus' journeys, making picture fact files about him. Exploring the world in the role play area, and exploring what materials float and sink so that we can design and build our own boats next week. We even got to explore different materials using a microscope attached to the computer!! In Maths this week we continued to explore the number system and we enjoyed our first week of Power Hour too!
It was a fabulous week of writing poetry, exploring doubling and halving, making games, and looking at the topic 'An Aimsir' in Gaeilge.
We studied some more poems and made a list of things that poems sometimes have, such as rhyming or repetition. Then we had a go of writing our own poems about our favourite toys and members of our family. We talked about the fact that poems can be happy, sad, funny or anything in between really! We discussed that it is up to the poet to say what they want to say! We had great fun exploring toys from the past and making our very own games! This week we were learning about Arctic animals and we had lots of fun. We made pictures of Santa and his or her toolkit and animal fact files. We had lots of fun in the role play area. In Maths we did hard work.
By Caoilinn, Wiktoria, Kara and Michalena Today we performed a song for everyone in our assembly. We sang 'Toom Bah Ee Lero', a call and response song which we have been looking at during our music time. It was super to see 1st class perform in front of their peers. The rest of the week was as busy as ever, with a visit from Santa and plenty of work in English, Maths, Gaeilge and Aistear. In English we have been looking at describing things and at writing stories. I hope to be able to share some of the wonderful stories the children have been writing, but need to work out how to do that first! Below is a link to the song Toom Bah Ee lero It was round two of the bridge testing today! There was mass excitement as the bridges surpassed expectations and only came clattering down after wooden blocks were piled on top!
Well done everyone for being a fabulous team and enjoying exploring the world around you with such joy! What a busy day!
Today we had the joy of sharing lots of stories about our grandparents and many Grandparents coming to visit the classroom too. Thank you to everyone who was able to come and visit! Today was also our first day to test the strength of our bridges. We took on other teams from our class to see how many blocks our bridge could support! Well done to everyone for being fantastic competitors whether you won or lost. Those whose were successful will be taking on each other tomorrow to find the two strongest bridges from the class! This week we have been looking at the story of 'Fionn and the Dragon'. It has been fabulous to see the enthusiasm with which the children have tried to defend the High King of Tara from the pesky dragon! We've also built crannógs and placed prehistoric monuments on a map of Ireland. Have a look at the photos below! |
